How to Play Cornhole: Rules, Tips, and Gear

What is Cornhole?

History

Cornhole (also known as bean bag toss or bags) has its origins disputed: some sources credit 14th-century Germany as its birthplace while Native Americans of the Midwest may be more responsible. Over time, however, cornhole has grown into an extremely popular backyard and tailgate game.

Where to Play

Due to its easy setup, it has quickly become popular at parks, parties, tailgates, and family gatherings, bringing people of all ages together for casual fun or friendly competition.

Equipment

For this game, all that's necessary are two slanted boards with holes near their tops and eight fabric bean bags. Players take turns throwing and tossing these beanbags to either land them on the board or drop through one of its holes and score points.

Cornhole Setup and Rules

1. How to Set Up a Cornhole Game

To set up a cornhole game, set two boards 27 feet apart, measured from their front edges, each measuring 2 feet wide by 4 feet long, with a 6-inch hole centered 9 inches from their top corners. Split into two teams using four bags with similar colors on them for play.

2. Breakdown of Rules

To play cornhole game, players from opposing teams gather around one board and take turns throwing their bags underhand onto it from behind its front edge. Bags that land on or fall through a hole on the board score one point each; those that land elsewhere score three. Once all eight bags have been thrown, all eight scores are added up; only one team may score per round so only the difference in points between both teams counts toward scoring; the first team to reach 21 wins the round!

3. Casual VS. Official Rules

While official rules provide more guidance for how you should play, casual play allows more leeway when it comes to setting rules. You can adjust the distance between boards for easier or harder play, and the pitching style may also change accordingly. Some people also play "first to 21 wins by two," whereby winning by at least two points must occur the first time around. For backyard games, you could even skip alternating throws altogether and throw all bags simultaneously! Most importantly, though, is to reach an agreement among your friends prior to commencing play so everyone knows their expectations before commencing!

Tips and Techniques for Playing Cornhole

Throwing Techniques

1. Use an underhand, bowling-style motion with your arm extended straight down from your shoulder. Your stance should remain stable with feet about shoulder-width apart.
2. When tossing the bag, be sure to maintain an arm-controlled throwing motion while following through by pointing toward your target. Doing this ensures a consistent trajectory which helps ensure the bags land where desired.

Strategies for Scoring

1. Don't always shoot directly for the hole; rather, focus on targeting the lower half of the board instead. A well-placed bag in this region will likely slide into the hole for three points and still stay on the board, earning one point regardless of its fate.
2. As your skills develop, add new shots to your arsenal. Experiment with different forms such as slide shots (which aim for smooth transition from bag to hole) or blocker shots (to prevent opponents from scoring), as well as airmail shots which throw the bag directly into its target without touching board).

Common Mistakes for Beginners

1. If throwing too hard, often leading to it hitting off of the board or passing by it.
2. Have an inconsistent stance or motion, leading to inaccurate throws. Beginning players also tend to focus only on hitting holes rather than scoring or playing defense on other areas of the course.
3. One of the most frequent mistakes is foot fouls - when throwing, accidentally stepping over the front edge of the board when throwing and disqualifying it immediately. By avoiding these traps, your game will noticeably improve!
